What Network Cables Should I Buy?

Computer experts will tell you that a wired connection is better to use than a wireless one.  Those who aren't computer literate, however, probably can only go into a store and ask for an internet cable.  To help bridge this gap, we offer you this short guide to cables with a Cat 5 Connector.

Even cable technology has advanced in recent years so that now customers have the choice of cat 5, cat 5e (e stands for enhanced), or cat 6 cables.  Cat 6 cables have double the bandwidth of cat 5e cables and are able to replace them.  Although the casual user may not notice much difference,  technology is likely to advance to the point that in the future there will be some things you can only do on the internet with a cat 6 connection. Sometimes the cables will be designated in other ways as well such as RJ45, which refers to the type of socket they plug into, or as ethernet, patch, or network cables.

Cat 5 Connectors and cables may be purchased in a few different forms.  Many companies, including Belkin, Tripp Lite, Star Tech, and Cables to Go offer cables sized for personal use with the RJ45 connectors already attached.  These cables are readily available and range in length from 5 to 50 feet.  Prices are approximately $2 to $10 for Cat 5e cables depending on length.  Cat 6 cables cost $3 to $15 for similar lengths of cable.  Of special interest to those who travel frequently is the Zip-Linq retractable cat 6 cable, which prevents nasty cable tangles while traveling.

Those seeking to buy cables for commercial applications, such as wiring office buildings, schools, or multiple residential customers, may benefit from buying both the Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable and the RJ45 connectors in bulk and putting together their own custom length cables.  Bulk cable is available from Black Box, Cables to Go, and Monster and is usually sold in 1,000 ft rolls.  Rolls of cat 5e cost $70 to $100, and rolls of cat 6 cost $100 to $140.  RJ45 connectors can be bought in packs of 100 which cost anywhere from $10 for simple cheap ones to almost $100 for the really high end ones.  Tools are also available to help you assemble these components together so that you can have a network wired and running in no time.  Whatever your needs, you can be sure you can find a network cabling solution that fits both your requirements and your budget.

Many organisations use a three tier support staff solution, with tier one (help desk) personnel handling the initial calls, tier 2 (technicians and PC support analysts) and tier three (network administrators). Most of those organisations follow a fixed staffing ratio, and being a network administrator is either the top job, or next to top job, within the technical support department.
